Autonomous systems create moral blind spots. When a self-driving car causes harm, responsibility diffuses across programmers, data scientists, corporate boards, and even users. This dispersal mirrors modern society's broader evasion of accountability—we've built systems where everyone is responsible but no one is to blame.

The legal system struggles with this opacity. Current liability frameworks assume human intent, but AI operates on optimization functions. Punishing a corporation for algorithmic harm is like fining a river for flooding—it misunderstands the causal mechanism. We need new models of responsibility that account for emergent behaviors in complex systems.

The Way Forward

Navigating AI ethics requires acknowledging three uncomfortable truths:
