6 movies with unbelievable scenes about programmers
Movies are one of the best ways for entertainment. Not only today’s Sci-Fi and fairytale movies take us for a ride of an imaginary world but also inspire us in any aspect of our life. Same way, there have few movies that motivate us and recharge us to learn to programme and do unimaginary things with the computer.
To inspire newbie and demotivated pro programmers, we enlist 6 movies about computers and technology that bring our thinking to next level. Whenever you going to watch them, you’ll get excited again and again. Hope this list will also increase your energy level like us. Without taking a long time let’s start-
Virtuosity (1995)
Virtuosity treats technology like it's a pot of boiling spaghetti, throwing it all against the wall. The special effects are fairly advanced, particularly given the time, and Crowe and co-star Denzel Washington's acting is so good. But the idea that a programmer could extract the personality from 200 criminals. Crowe was known as SID 6.7, for Sadistic, Intelligent and Dangerous.
Revolution OS
Revolution OS is basically the authoritative documentary about the free software movement. This film should be required viewing for anyone who cares about open source. The film begins with glimpses of Raymond, a Linux IPO, Torvalds, Perens, Stallman, then sets the historical stage in the early days of hackers and computer hobbyists when the code was shared freely. Torvalds describes the development of the Linux kernel. Raymond and Stallman clarify the philosophy of free software of Linux. This movie is found as a well thought for explaining the principles of the free software and open source concepts.
WarGames
1983’s WarGames is a classic. It stars a young Matthew Broderick as an 80’s kid hacker who unwittingly accesses War Operation Plan Response, a United States military supercomputer programmed to predict possible outcomes of nuclear war. He gets WOPR to run a nuclear war simulation with thinking of it’s a computer. The results is a nuclear missile scare that nearly started the World War III. This movie has a clever hacker kid who outsmarts the grown-ups, awesome 80’s music and some pretty decent cinematography as well. That kid had to hack into government servers in order to find decent video games.
Ex Machina
Ex Machina is a refreshing take on the tired AI-gone-wrong sci-fi trope. Ex Machina goes deeper to make intelligence "artificial" versus "real". Ex Machina is a beautifully made movie. The cinematography is breathtaking. To watch this movie every time felt as a software developer to create beauty and meaning in the world. Ex Machina makes a subtle but powerful statement: be careful what you say to your computer.
The Matrix
1999’s The Matrix is pretty much the quintessential sci-fi hacker movie. It depicts a dystopian future in which reality, as perceived by most humans, is actually computer simulation called “the Matrix”, created by sentient machines in order to subdue the human race. A group of human rebels who regularly hack into the Matrix to fight the machines and free minds. The Matrix pretty much single-handedly introduced the concept of “hackers” into the mainstream. It has inspired thousands of people to become interested in computers, and to this day remains one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made.
The Social Network
Every list is incomplete if David Fincher's The Social Network does not include on it. Because the film is beautifully shot, impeccably written and masterfully edited. This movie is adapted from Ben Mezrich 2009 book, The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, and fictionally portrays the founding of Facebook and the mess of lawsuits that followed. This film is really a work of fiction. This film also highlights the desire for acceptance, intellectual property rights, misogyny in tech and the dark side of university social culture. Every time when you’ll watch this movie will think about building something RIGHT NOW.
